The Ministry of Health, through the General Directorate of Environmental Health and Food Safety (Digesa), announced on March 20 its participation in the “Training Mission for Strengthening Capacities in Food Safety.” The initiative aims to improve food safety standards and expand commercial opportunities for Peruvian products in the European market.
The training, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism as part of the Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, is taking place from March 16 to 31. Its goal is to align Peru’s sanitary controls with the strict regulations required by the European Union.
Dr. José Adalberto Latorre Gálvez, director general of Digesa, said this technical assistance is important for both public health and the national economy. “[It] will allow us to standardize sanitary surveillance processes with European parameters, ensuring that Peruvian products are not only competitive but also meet the highest levels of safety for human consumption,” Latorre Gálvez said.
The opening session included officials from Sanipes and Senasa, as well as representatives from the Delegation of the European Union in Lima and Mincetur. The collaboration between these institutions aims to ensure effective oversight throughout the entire production chain—from farms to international markets.
During the training sessions, specialists are addressing key topics such as risk management, crisis response strategies for pesticide residue violations, prevention of food fraud, contaminant control, and proper use of veterinary products according to European Union guidelines.
According to Digesa officials, these efforts reaffirm Peru’s commitment to technical excellence in food regulation and control. They say this will help position Peru as a regional leader in food safety while supporting both consumer welfare and national producers.
