The Ministry of Health announced on May 6 that maintaining healthy iron levels is important for mothers during pregnancy and breastfeeding to support the growth and well-being of their babies. The ministry offered recommendations to help mothers have enough energy for daily activities and childcare.
Maribel Huayhua Alarcón, a nutritionist at the National Hospital Arzobispo Loayza, said that most people in Peru do not follow a balanced diet. She said, “A balanced diet should include fruits and vegetables that provide vitamins A, D, and magnesium, which help form blood. You also need to be careful not to mix iron with too much calcium or fiber at the same time because it prevents proper absorption.” According to Huayhua Alarcón, prioritizing quick breakfasts and low consumption of fruits and vegetables can affect energy levels and postpartum recovery.
Huayhua Alarcón said that iron deficiency anemia remains one of the biggest health challenges for pregnant and breastfeeding women. She explained that the body needs more nutrients during these stages to ensure both maternal health and baby development. Vitamins such as folic acid, B12, and vitamin A are crucial in helping transport essential nutrients throughout the body.
She also said that good nutrition while breastfeeding ensures high-quality breast milk. “If mom is well-nourished, the baby will receive all necessary benefits for their first six months of life, growing protected and strong,” she said.
The Ministry of Health recommends practical steps such as eating protein-rich foods like chicken, eggs, turkey breast, or oily fish; pairing meals with citrus fruits to improve vitamin C and iron absorption; adding spinach or chard to daily dishes; attending prenatal checkups; monitoring hemoglobin levels; and following supplementation schedules as directed by healthcare providers.
According to the ministry’s statement, regular medical visits are important so mothers can protect their own health while laying a foundation for optimal child growth.
