The Ministry of Health announced on May 16 that a coordinated organ donation operation led by the Directorate of Donations, Transplants and Blood Bank (DIGDOT) resulted in life-saving transplants for five patients. This marks the second case of organ and tissue donation recorded in less than 24 hours in the country.
According to the Ministry, after confirming the death of a 57-year-old woman due to a stroke, procurement teams mobilized quickly to carry out necessary procedures. The woman’s family decided to honor her wishes, as she had registered “Yes” for organ donation on her national ID.
As a result, her liver, kidneys, and corneas were donated under strict medical protocols to ensure timely and safe transport. These organs are expected to save or improve the lives of five people who were on the national waiting list.
Mary Díaz, director general of DIGDOT at the Ministry of Health, said: “Each organ and tissue is a second chance for a Peruvian who needs a transplant to keep living. Currently, more than 6,000 people in the country are waiting for that opportunity.”
The Ministry expressed gratitude and respect toward the donor’s family. It also encouraged citizens to discuss organ and tissue donation within their families and indicate their willingness to donate on their identification documents.
