The Ministry of Health of Peru recognized the work of psychologists across the country in a statement released on April 30, marking the Day of Peruvian Psychology. The ministry, through its Directorate of Mental Health, thanked psychology professionals for their role in supporting mental health and their ongoing commitment to the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.
According to the ministry, psychologists play an important part in promoting healthy lifestyles, preventing mental health problems, and providing timely attention to emotional and behavioral needs throughout people’s lives. Their work is seen as vital for strengthening personal skills, improving family relationships, and encouraging healthier and more resilient communities.
July Caballero Peralta, director of the Directorate of Mental Health at the Ministry of Health (Minsa), said: “Las y los psicólogos son actores esenciales para acercar la salud mental a la población, acompañando los procesos de recuperación, prevención y fortalecimiento emocional en miles de personas con calidad y calidez.”
Caballero also pointed out that there has been steady growth in human resources for psychology within Peru’s public health system. Between 2014 and 2024, the number of psychologists working at Minsa health facilities nationwide increased from 1,739 to 8,113 professionals—a rise of 366.6 percent. This increase reflects efforts to strengthen mental health services and prioritize comprehensive care.
In recent years, access to community-based mental health services has expanded in Peru. Psychologists have played a strategic role by offering accessible support that is coordinated with local communities. Their contributions have been especially important during times of crisis or disaster when emotional well-being is most affected.
The Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to further developing professional skills among staff members as well as interdisciplinary collaboration within mental health care teams. The ministry concluded by congratulating all psychologists on their day and expressing gratitude for their daily dedication toward building a more empathetic society.
