The Ministry of Health announced on April 29 that it is continuing efforts to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV by providing specialized technical assistance to prioritized regions across the country. Through its Directorate for Prevention and Control of HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and Hepatitis, a technical team was sent to the Ica region to strengthen program management at both regional networks and selected health facilities.
According to the ministry, specialists visited several health institutions in Ica, including Regional Hospital of Ica, Santa María del Socorro Hospital, San José de Chincha Hospital, San Juan de Dios de Pisco Hospital, Guadalupe Health Center, La Tinguiña Health Center, and the regional reference laboratory. The aim was to reinforce guidance on combined HIV prevention strategies—particularly access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for high-risk populations at primary care level.
The visits also focused on updating knowledge about syndromic and etiological management of sexually transmitted infections based on Technical Health Standard No. 240-MINSA/DGIESP-2026 for STI prevention and control approved earlier this year. These interventions are intended not only to optimize healthcare service management but also promote decentralization towards primary care while encouraging collaboration with community organizations involved in the response against HIV.
Currently in Ica there are eleven healthcare establishments offering antiretroviral treatment: ten under the Ministry of Health and one belonging to EsSalud. This expansion helps increase coverage and ensure continuity of treatment for those who need it.
“With these actions, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to continue strengthening the national response against HIV by bringing quality services closer and reducing gaps in care for vulnerable populations,” said ministry officials.
