The Ministry of Health announced on March 26 that more than 8,300 health centers across Peru are distributing contraceptives for free as part of efforts to promote responsible use and support sexual and reproductive health. The initiative aims to provide broad access to up to 14 different types of contraceptive methods, including subdermal implants, three-month and monthly injectables, copper T intrauterine devices, and tubal ligation.
Among the most requested options are male and female condoms. These not only help prevent unplanned pregnancies but also reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B, and other diseases.
The Ministry emphasized that consistent and correct condom use is one of the most effective ways to lower the risk of infection. It recommends this especially for young people.
“Any person can access counseling and care in family planning clinics where health professionals provide personalized guidance on the most suitable method for each case,” said Marysol Campos from the technical team at the Directorate of Sexual and Reproductive Health at the Ministry.
