The Ministry of Health, through the General Directorate for Disaster Risk Management and National Health Defense (DIGERD), held a virtual technical assistance meeting on March 30 aimed at strengthening the health sector’s preparedness for large-scale disasters. The session was organized in line with Resolution No. 001-2025-PCM/SGRD, which sets out the national schedule for drills and simulations from 2025 to 2027.
This initiative is part of the lead-up to a nationwide simulation scheduled for April 1. The meeting targeted the Disaster Risk Management working group and its technical teams, focusing on enhancing their operational capabilities and ensuring a timely and coordinated response during emergencies.
During the event, participants discussed Ministerial Resolution No. 676-2024-MINSA, which approves the Technical Document: Emergency Operations of the National Health System. This document establishes protocols that health institutions must follow when responding to major adverse events.
The technical assistance allowed attendees to identify their specific roles and understand coordination mechanisms necessary for implementing actions during simulations. Organizers said this would strengthen both organization and response capacity within Peru’s health system.
Fanny Ortiz Deza, director general of DIGERD at the Ministry of Health, opened the session by emphasizing “the importance of preparation and inter-institutional coordination to protect public health in emergency situations.” DIGERD is responsible for organizing this exercise, which will assess decision-making abilities and response capacity within MINSA’s Disaster Risk Management Working Group when faced with high-impact scenarios.
