The Ministry of Health advised on March 26 that people who attend gyms should take preventive measures to avoid the spread of infections. Dr. Víctor Llerena Miñan, an infectious disease specialist at Hospital Carlos Lanfranco La Hoz, said that closed spaces with high traffic like gyms can become sources for viruses and bacteria.
This topic is important because regular exercise is healthy, but crowded gym environments may increase the risk of infection if hygiene is not maintained.
Llerena said that germs can easily spread through frequent contact with equipment such as dumbbells, bars, and machines. He also warned about the risk of fungal infections in showers. “The main preventive measure is hand washing and always having personal hygiene items. In showers it is recommended to use sandals to avoid possible skin fungus,” he said.
He added that limited ventilation and crowding in gyms allow respiratory viruses to linger in the air. Llerena recommended staying home when experiencing symptoms like cough or sneezing to avoid infecting others.
To reduce risks, he suggested washing hands with soap and water before and after workouts; avoiding touching the face while using equipment; carrying two towels—one with disinfectant for cleaning objects before use and another for personal hygiene; wearing sandals when showering or changing; and drying feet well before putting on socks or shoes.
The Ministry emphasized reinforcing personal hygiene measures to prevent virus and bacteria transmission. It also reminded people to visit a nearby health center if they experience any symptoms of infection.
