The Ministry of Health announced on May 9 that it successfully carried out Megaoperativo de Donación No. 13, providing hope for six patients in urgent need of transplants.
This operation was made possible by the family of a 54-year-old donor who authorized the donation. The procedure took place at Hospital Nacional Hipólito Unanue and involved a multidisciplinary team working together for several hours to complete the donation of a heart, liver, kidneys, and corneas.
According to the ministry, these organs and tissues will be allocated to patients on waiting lists at Instituto Nacional Cardiovascular (INCOR), Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen, and Instituto Nacional de Oftalmología (INO). The ministry said this act not only impacts six Peruvian families but also demonstrates the effectiveness of the national procurement network during large-scale operations.
“The Ministry of Health reminds everyone that organ and tissue donation is an altruistic act that saves lives and that an informed decision can save many lives. For this reason, it is important to register your YES on your national ID card and communicate this decision to your family,” said the Ministry of Health.
Looking ahead, officials encourage more people to consider registering as donors in order to help address ongoing needs for transplants across Peru.
