The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism announced on March 30 that the railway section between kilometers 114 and 115 (Machupicchu – Hidroeléctrica) is temporarily closed following a landslide in the Mandor sector, Machupicchu district, Cusco region. The measure was taken to protect the safety of users.
The closure affects tourism operators, travelers, and local residents who rely on this route for access to Machupicchu. Authorities said they are working with Ferrocarril Transandino S.A. (FETRANSA) to assess the damage, remove debris, and clean the tracks so that service can be restored as soon as possible.
Since the incident occurred, “the Mincetur through the Tourist Protection Network has maintained permanent monitoring of the situation, coordinating actions with the Executive Branch and local authorities to ensure timely attention and safe movement for visitors.” The ministry also said that tourists present in the affected area have received assistance from both Machupicchu Municipality staff and railway concessionaire personnel, allowing for their safe evacuation.
Tourism operators, travel agencies, and visitors are urged not to use or promote travel along the Machupicchu – Hidroeléctrica route until it is deemed safe again. In addition, police presence has been increased in coordination with Tourist Police to prevent entry by unsafe routes.
Meanwhile, “the Ollantaytambo – Machupicchu rail route operates normally and safely for visitor access.” The ministry reiterated its commitment to tourist safety: “Mincetur reiterates its commitment to tourist safety and urges people to get information only through official channels such as Iperú via WhatsApp at 944 492 314.”
The broader impact includes disruption for those planning visits or tours involving this segment of track. Restoration efforts continue while officials monitor conditions closely.
