The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) announced on March 24 the presentation of the fourth and fifth Regional Transparency Studies by the EITI Loreto Regional Commission, in an event organized by the Regional Government of Loreto.
These studies are part of efforts to promote transparency in extractive activities across Peru. The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) aims to increase understanding about how mining and hydrocarbon sectors contribute to economic and social development in the country.
Roy Muñoz Gómez, consultant responsible for the studies, presented key findings, conclusions, and recommendations at an event attended by regional authorities and civil society representatives. Muñoz Gómez said that extractive activities account for 19% of Loreto’s gross value added. He also noted that between 2020 and 2024, transfers from canon fees and royalties reached S/693 million in Loreto, mainly from oil-related sources. The Regional Government of Loreto received S/299.09 million during this period.
MINEM acted as Technical Secretariat for EITI Peru through its Office of Social Management (OGGS), providing support to the EITI Loreto Regional Commission throughout both studies’ preparation processes. These efforts are intended to strengthen governance and transparency regarding economic resources generated by extractive industries.
The ministry said other regions have also implemented regional EITI commissions with local representation. Increasing transparency at subnational levels is expected to improve public governance, build social trust, and encourage responsible investment.
