The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) announced on March 31 the completion of the “Improvement and Expansion of the Rural Electric System” project in Conga Blanca, Cañafisto, San Pedro, and Cuyumalca, located in the district and province of Chota, Cajamarca. The initiative directly benefits 3,420 residents from these communities.

According to MINEM, this project is important because it provides reliable electricity access that can support local economic activities such as carpentry, metalworking, commerce, and services. Access to electricity is expected to improve living conditions for families while also creating new opportunities for local businesses.

The inauguration ceremony was led by Nilo Pereira, Vice Minister of Electricity at MINEM. Pereira said that the new infrastructure will enable productive activities in workshops and educational centers. “Access to electricity not only improves living conditions at home but also drives economic opportunities in communities,” Pereira said during the event. He added that this work is part of MINEM’s commitment to close gaps in rural energy access across Peru.

The completed works benefit a total of 841 subscribers—including 38 special connections intended for productive uses such as grain mills and other local enterprises—helping strengthen the area’s economy. Before this intervention some families only had provisional power supply which limited service quality and made consumption measurement difficult; now they have a modern system described as reliable and sustainable by officials.

The project required an investment exceeding S/4.1 million funded by DGER resources from MINEM. It ensures continuous safe electrical service along with adequate public lighting for beneficiaries.

Local authorities including Oscar Regalado—the mayor of Cuyumalca—and technical representatives from MINEM attended the inauguration ceremony held at Cuyumalca’s population center. The ministry says it remains committed to promoting similar projects nationwide with a focus on energy inclusion and sustainable development.
