The Ministry of Education announced on Apr. 1 that the Casa de la Literatura Peruana is providing a book lending service in Lima Metropolitana. The initiative aims to make reading more accessible, especially for those who cannot frequently visit a library.
Since its launch in 2020, the service has recorded 14,773 loans and served 2,970 users who have borrowed at least one book. The collection includes 8,739 books across 21 collections designed for people of all ages. Available materials range from novels and short stories to children’s books and educational texts for students, teachers, researchers, and the general public.
Popular authors among borrowers include Mario Vargas Llosa, José María Arguedas, Julio Ramón Ribeyro, and Gabriel García Márquez. Frequently requested titles are “Conversación en La Catedral,” “Cien años de soledad,” and “Travesuras de la niña mala.” Users can borrow up to four books for a period of fourteen days with an option to renew for another fourteen days. Registration requires only a national ID card (DNI) and a utility bill; users are encouraged to check the online catalog before selecting their titles.
The highest demand for this service occurs between April and September. While adults use the service most often, it is also open to children, youth, and teachers. Service hours run from Wednesday through Sunday in two shifts as part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Education to increase access to reading opportunities.
Minister of Education María Esther Cuadros said: “Con este servicio abrimos más oportunidades para aprender, imaginar y pensar mejor. La lectura es una herramienta importante para formar ciudadanos críticos y construir una sociedad más informada.”
