The Ministry of Education of Peru announced on Apr. 23 that it is prioritizing the socioemotional well-being of students to ensure their comprehensive development, which includes both knowledge and humanistic aspects. This announcement was made by Gerber Pérez, Vice Minister of Pedagogical Management, during the opening ceremony of the XXXVI National Meeting of Directors organized by the National Office of Catholic Education.

Pérez said that many students, especially in remote areas, lack emotional support and family accompaniment, which directly affects their learning and growth. He stated that the ministry is working to strengthen a humanistic approach in education by incorporating psychologists and promoting safe and supportive environments for students. “Education is a right that the State must guarantee without discrimination, ensuring equal opportunities and quality for all students,” Pérez said.

The event took place in Santa Rosa district in Lima with more than 160 directors and coordinators from Catholic Education Offices participating. The opening ceremony was attended by Juana Sono Hernández from the National Council of Education; Alfredo León, Director of the National Office for Catholic Education; and Ricardo García, Bishop of Yauyos Prelature and President of the Episcopal Commission for Education, Culture and Cultural Assets.

The Ministry also promotes sports opportunities as part of its educational initiatives according to its official website. Additionally, it advances cultural and social well-being through efforts to promote equity, interculturality, and eliminate discrimination in education according to its official website.

To reach all regions across Peru, the Ministry operates from its central headquarters in San Borja while utilizing decentralized regional directorates throughout the country according to its official website. As a key entity within Peru’s Executive Branch according to its official website, it serves students, teachers, and communities nationwide according to its official website.

The Ministry oversees national education policy while supporting teacher development programs as well as curriculum improvements. It works with regional governments to foster equity and inclusion in education—a role it has fulfilled since being founded in 1837 as an autonomous institution according to its official website.
