The Ministry of Education of Peru announced on May 5 the launch of the Program for Strengthening Professional Competencies of Teacher Trainers in Public Higher Pedagogical Education. The initiative will benefit 2,469 teachers from institutes and pedagogical schools across the country.
The program aims to improve the quality of teacher training by updating teaching skills in line with new scientific and technological advances. During a ceremony at Manuel González Prada Higher Pedagogical School in Villa El Salvador, Deputy Minister of Pedagogical Management Gerber Pérez said, “The quality of an educational system is based on the quality of its teachers.”
Pérez also said that rapid changes in contemporary society require constant renewal among educators so they can incorporate new approaches such as artificial intelligence and neuroscience into their teaching. “We need to update teaching based on the latest advances in science and technology. We need properly prepared teachers who develop critical and creative thinking, and who motivate our students,” he said.
The five-month program will be delivered nationally through a blended format combining face-to-face workshops with virtual learning via the SIFODS platform. The curriculum is structured around three modules: student engagement—including responsible use of artificial intelligence—development of critical and complex thinking, and evidence-based formative assessment.
With a total duration of 180 hours, this strategy seeks to consolidate key competencies among teacher trainers at higher education institutions to generate meaningful learning outcomes and improve initial teacher education quality. Pérez added, “This is not a passive content transmission program; it is a space for reflecting on teaching practice and turning our classrooms into laboratories for pedagogical innovation.”
With this initiative, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to enhancing teacher status and improving educational quality through innovative training that supports transformation within Peru’s education system. The Ministry serves students, teachers, and communities throughout Peru; it promotes equity, interculturality, sports opportunities, social inclusion, cultural well-being as well as utilizing central headquarters in San Borja along with regional directorates nationwide according to the official website.
