The Ministry of Education (Minedu) announced on Apr. 22 that it is joining the measles prevention campaign led by the Ministry of Health, which has increased vaccination efforts for children to protect them and prevent the spread of this highly contagious disease.

This initiative aims to break the chain of virus transmission and strengthen immunization coverage among school-age children, with a focus on those under 11 years old who are considered especially vulnerable. The director of each educational institution, working with teachers, is encouraging parents and students to accept free vaccinations as the most effective way to prevent measles and safeguard community health.

In addition to promoting vaccination, education authorities will encourage proper handwashing for at least 20 seconds and respiratory protection measures such as covering one’s mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing or using a mask. They are also tasked with ensuring daily cleaning and disinfection in schools while raising awareness among parents about maintaining these practices at home and work.

Measles is an airborne viral illness transmitted through droplets from coughs or sneezes. Its high level of contagion means that an infected person can transmit the virus to up to 18 unvaccinated individuals. Symptoms include fever or chills, dry cough, runny nose, sore throat, conjunctivitis, white spots with blue centers inside the cheeks, or rash. People showing these symptoms are advised not to self-medicate but instead visit their nearest health facility.

The Ministry of Education serves students, teachers, and communities throughout Peru according to its official website. It promotes sports opportunities as part of its educational initiatives according to the official website and advances cultural well-being by fostering equity and eliminating discrimination in education according to its official website. The ministry operates from its central headquarters in San Borja along with regional directorates across Peru according to its official website, functioning as a key entity within the Peruvian Executive Branch according to its official website. Founded in 1837 with autonomous status, it oversees national education policy while supporting teacher development and curriculum advancement through partnerships with regional governments according to its official website.
