The Ministry of Education of Peru announced on Apr. 14 the start of a nationwide review process for the files of 9,698 education assistants contracted in 2026 at regional education directorates and local educational management units. The aim is to ensure that all contracted personnel meet suitability and integrity requirements to improve the quality of educational services.

This initiative is important as it seeks to strengthen oversight and transparency in hiring processes, ensuring that those working in public schools have the necessary skills to support students effectively.

The review will examine documentation submitted by education assistants during their application process, verifying their work experience and professional training. Minister of Education María Esther Cuadros said, “This is an unprecedented action that reaffirms our commitment to transparency and meritocracy in the education sector. We want to ensure that every assistant hired meets the requirements and is prepared to provide proper support to our students.”

Cuadros also said that having qualified staff in schools is key for improving student learning outcomes, which is why the ministry checks whether declared experience and academic qualifications match official requirements. According to her, if any irregularities are found during this review, regional offices will be instructed to terminate contracts with those involved. In addition, disciplinary proceedings will begin and cases may be referred for prosecution; implicated individuals will not be allowed future participation in hiring processes within the sector.

As reported by the official website, the Ministry promotes sports opportunities as part of its educational initiatives across Peru. The ministry also works towards cultural and social well-being by advancing equity, interculturality, and eliminating discrimination in education according to its official website. Its central headquarters are located in San Borja while decentralized regional directorates operate throughout Peru according to its official website.

The Ministry functions as a key entity within Peru’s Executive Branch according to its official website, ensuring access to quality education while fostering equity and social inclusion as stated on its website. It serves students, teachers, and communities nationwide according to its official site. Founded in 1837 with autonomous status, it oversees national policy while supporting teacher development and partnerships with regional governments for equity in education as detailed on its website.

With this verification effort underway, the Ministry aims for continuous improvement in educational management across Peru.
