The Ministry of Education began the 2026 school year for Special Basic Education with more than 17,000 students returning to classes at the 428 public Special Basic Education Centers (CEBE) across all regions of the country, according to a March 18 announcement.
This initiative aims to promote relevant and equitable learning opportunities and ensure the right to education for students with disabilities. The ministry is strengthening comprehensive support in these centers.
At a ceremony held at CEBE Perú-Holanda in Jesús María, Enith Alicia Ruiz Guerrero, director of Special Basic Education, said teachers, specialists, and management teams at CEBEs contribute to the overall development and autonomy of students in their daily lives. She toured facilities designed for students with severe intellectual disabilities who require ongoing specialized support. These include areas for psychomotricity and multisensory activities, an accessible library called CEBEteca, a cooking workshop, and a technology classroom.
CEBE Perú-Holanda will mark its 60th anniversary in June. It serves 163 students aged three to twenty across seventeen classrooms. The center provides both educational instruction and services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, and social work at the initial and primary levels of Special Basic Education.
Rocío Ulloa, director of CEBE Perú-Holanda, said family involvement is important so that children can become more independent in dressing themselves, eating, and moving around.
