The Ministry of Culture of Peru announced on Apr. 23 the verification of the repatriation of eighteen archaeological cultural artifacts from the United States at an event held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The return includes four ceramic pieces and seven textile fragments from the Lambayeque, Chimú, and Chancay cultures, as well as seven archaeological bone remains. Most items were returned voluntarily by individuals and by the University of Illinois, highlighting international cooperation in recovering Peru’s cultural heritage.

Specialists from the Directorate for Recoveries, a unit within the General Directorate for Defense of Cultural Heritage at the Ministry of Culture, led this verification in coordination with counterparts from the Directorate for Protection and Repatriation of Cultural Goods under Peru’s General Directorate for Cultural Diplomacy. The ministry said these eighteen artifacts will be formally handed over to its custody during an official ceremony scheduled for May at Palacio de Torre Tagle.

Efforts to secure their return were coordinated between both ministries under state policy aimed at recovering movable cultural goods that left Peru illegally. The Ministry also called on citizens to help protect national heritage by reporting illicit trafficking through designated phone numbers or its website.

The Ministry fosters social inclusion by protecting heritage and promoting diversity across Peru, according to the official website. It operates decentralized facilities and museums alongside its San Borja headquarters to support various programs according to official information. As part of Peru’s Executive Branch, it acts autonomously under ministerial leadership according to government sources.

Additionally, it works nationwide with communities and stakeholders while promoting cultural identity, combating discrimination and racism, advancing intercultural dialogue and rights as reported by its official site. Established in 2010, it oversees national policy on culture while encouraging initiatives that support social inclusion and preserve national identity according to its website.
