Ministry of Culture to hold virtual discussion on marinera norteña and Peruvian identity

The Ministry of Culture of Peru announced on April 14 that it will host a virtual discussion titled “La marinera norteña e identidad peruana” on April 22. The event aims to promote recognition, appreciation, and safeguarding of cultural expressions in Peru.

The discussion is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen national identity through the preservation and promotion of traditional dances. Christian Arbaiza Mendoza, Director of the Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) La Libertad, said that the event will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in a virtual format with free access for all interested participants via an online link. The session is organized by the Intangible Cultural Heritage area within DDC La Libertad, which leads initiatives aimed at reinforcing collective memory around the marinera dance.

Presenters and bearers from various provinces—including Ascope, Otuzco, Pacasmayo, Sánchez Carrión, Santiago de Chuco, and Trujillo—will share their experiences regarding this emblematic dance’s role as a living expression of Peruvian identity. Notable speakers include Bernabita Julia Casanatán Elorriaga (Casa Grande), Carlos Ñuñuvera Escobedo (Huamachuco), Nicolás de la Cruz Siccha (Santiago de Chuco), Sol Maricielo Calderón Alayo (Otuzco), Lucía Asmad Pantoja (Moche), and Marlon Alain Verástegui Rojas (Guadalupe).
