The Ministry of Culture announced on March 16 that it is strengthening efforts to protect and conserve both historical buildings and intangible cultural heritage in the province of Santiago de Chuco. The initiative is being carried out through the Directorate of Culture (DDC) La Libertad, which is providing technical assistance and working closely with local authorities.
This effort aims to ensure the maintenance and safeguarding of important regional heritage sites. Christian Arbaiza Mendoza, director of DDC La Libertad, visited Santiago de Chuco to confirm technical support from the Functional Area for Historical Heritage for conservation work at the Casa Museo César Vallejo. This museum is a significant site that highlights the life and work of renowned poet César Vallejo.
The Ministry said these actions are part of ongoing work to strengthen protection for regional heritage. The DDC La Libertad also offers technical guidance to private owners of monumental properties, helping them maintain and preserve their buildings while ensuring safety for residents and visitors.
“The cultural value of buildings like the Casa Museo César Vallejo lies in their history, architecture, social value, and cultural significance—attributes that give them identity and uniqueness. Their proper conservation requires active participation and joint action to guarantee their preservation,” said Christian Arbaiza.
Although DDC La Libertad cannot directly intervene in privately owned properties, its technical team provides ongoing advice for protecting assets considered part of Peru’s National Cultural Heritage. During his visit, Arbaiza Mendoza also met with Daniel De La Cruz, mayor of Cachicadán district; local council members; and Francisco San Martín, president of the Chamber of Tourism of La Libertad. The meeting focused on protecting intangible heritage related to celebrations honoring patron saint San Martín de Porres.
