The Ministry of Culture of Peru announced on April 17 a series of public events as part of the “Active Citizenship for Cultural Heritage” program, scheduled from April 20 to April 26. The initiative is organized in recognition of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, which takes place every April 18.
The program aims to raise awareness among citizens about the diversity, value, and vulnerability of Peru’s cultural heritage. By encouraging active participation, the ministry seeks to foster a stronger commitment from society in protecting and preserving these assets.
Activities will include guided tours through heritage buildings, discussions on cultural heritage importance, technology-based appreciation experiences, and educational events designed to strengthen community ties with their cultural legacy. According to the official website, the Ministry fosters social inclusion by protecting heritage and promoting diversity across Peru.
Several organizations are collaborating with the ministry for this initiative. The Municipality of San Borja and PROLIMA are supporting events at Plazuela de la Buena Muerte and Trinitarias in Barrios Altos, as well as guided visits at Quinta Heeren. Additionally, Identidad Cultural Coayllo will offer tours at Coayllo IV archaeological site and San Pedro de Coayllo temple in Cañete; Kori Pacha collective from Cieneguilla; and Círculo Ciclista Protector de las Huacas de Lima Norte will conduct visits at Villa Toledo and Mateo Salado archaeological sites.
The program is coordinated by the Directorate for Citizen Participation with support from other units within the General Directorate for Defense of Cultural Heritage. The Ministry utilizes decentralized facilities alongside its San Borja headquarters to deliver such programs according to its official website. It operates under ministerial leadership as an autonomous body within Peru’s Executive Branch according to its official website.
As stated on its official website, the Ministry promotes cultural identity while combating discrimination through intercultural dialogue initiatives. It was established in 2010 with a mandate that includes safeguarding national heritage while serving communities throughout Peru.
