The Ministry of Culture announced on March 27 the official reopening of the Capuliyoc–Cachora tourist route leading to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park, effective from April 15, following a technical meeting organized by the Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) Cusco on March 26.
The decision follows preventive maintenance, cleaning, and conditioning work along access routes to ensure safe conditions for visitors. The meeting included representatives from the Regional Management of Foreign Trade and Tourism; the Regional Office for Disaster Risk Management and Security; the Decentralized Subdirectorate for Cultural Heritage; the Unit for Security, National Defense and Disaster Risk Management; as well as mayors from Santa Teresa and San Pedro de Cachora districts.
Atilio Quispecusi Montalvo, head of Choquequirao Archaeological Park, said that while the Río Blanco section remains impassable, favorable conditions have been restored on the Capuliyoc–Cachora route after cleaning and maintenance efforts. Maritza Rosa Candia, executive director of DDC Cusco, said: “Las labores de mantenimiento garantizarán que los turistas puedan acceder al parque arqueológico con todas las medidas de seguridad recomendadas por los especialistas.”
As part of their agreements, participants decided to prepare technical reports and conduct ongoing monitoring to ensure both safe passage along the route and preservation of cultural heritage. Coordination among relevant institutions, local governments, travel agencies, and communities will also be strengthened.
The session concluded with all participating institutions signing an agreement reaffirming their commitment to joint efforts aimed at safeguarding cultural heritage while promoting safe and sustainable tourism in Cusco.
