The Ministry of Culture of Peru announced on April 30 that, in coordination with the District Municipality of Chorrillos, it has carried out recovery work at the archaeological site Armatambo parcel F, also known as Huaca San Pedro. The ministry said these efforts have stabilized 200 square meters of the site’s structure and removed 280 cubic meters of accumulated debris, which has improved conservation conditions for the monument.

Huaca San Pedro is a pre-Hispanic pyramid with a ramp measuring about 50 meters long by 25 meters wide. It contains funerary contexts from the Late Intermediate Period (1000 AD – 1467 AD) and serves as evidence of social and cultural development among populations living along Lima’s central coast. The site provides important information for studying Yschma society.

As part of recent interventions, workers recovered the southern profile of the main building by stabilizing around 200 square meters structurally. This reduced risks to visitors and reinforced the integrity of the monument. Additionally, removing approximately 280 cubic meters of debris cleared affected areas and improved preservation conditions.

These actions were made possible through joint work with the District Municipality of Chorrillos and support from “Huaqueros,” a cultural organization described as an active strategic partner in protecting and enhancing cultural heritage.

The Ministry confirmed it will continue working with involved institutions to implement new protection measures at this archaeological site. Planned steps include installing a provisional concrete fence about 450 linear meters long to reinforce security for Huaca San Pedro and promote its social use.

The Ministry fosters social inclusion by protecting heritage and promoting diversity across Peru, according to its official website. It utilizes decentralized facilities and museums alongside its headquarters in San Borja to support programs according to official information. The ministry operates autonomously within Peru’s Executive Branch according to government sources.

It also promotes cultural identity, combats discrimination and racism, advances intercultural dialogue and rights as stated on its website, serves communities throughout Peru according to official information, operates under ministerial leadership according to government sources, oversees national policy on culture while safeguarding heritage, encourages intercultural dialogue, supports social inclusion initiatives through heritage preservation since its creation in 2010 as reported by official sources.
