The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on March 20 the installation of a 30-meter modular bridge in the Tucusita sector, aiming to restore and ensure safe travel along the national route PE-3SG between Llalli and Umachiri, connecting the regions of Cusco and Puno.
This action follows an emergency caused by settlement of the upstream left abutment, which developed significant cracks and threatened the safety of the existing infrastructure. The ministry said that this situation resulted from both natural wear over time and frequent passage of heavy vehicles related to mining activities in the area, increasing risks for road users.
To maintain traffic flow during repairs, authorities constructed a temporary access downstream from the affected bridge. This allowed vehicles to continue using the route while preparations were made for installing the new modular structure. The emergency is located between kilometer markers 340+200 and 340+230 on route PE-3SG, specifically in the Umachiri – Puente Tucusita section, which is considered vital for connectivity between Llalli and Ayaviri.
Before installing the modular bridge, workers carried out river channeling on both banks to create suitable conditions for assembly and ensure stability for temporary access. According to officials, once completed, the new bridge will provide safer travel conditions for users, reduce travel times, and eliminate prolonged reliance on longer alternate routes.
The ministry said it remains committed to responding promptly to road emergencies and ensuring continued transit along non-concessioned sections of Peru’s National Road Network—especially those corridors that are strategic for regional connectivity and economic activity.
