The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation announced on Apr. 28 that it has completed riverbed cleaning and clearing works in critical areas of La Libertad. The intervention is intended to reduce risks from heavy rains, protect local residents, and safeguard agricultural activity.
The ministry reported that the National Water Authority carried out the work across 3.76 kilometers in the sectors of Mocan, Mocan II, San Nicolás, and El Badén. These efforts began in 2025 and have resulted in benefits for more than 4,000 people as well as the protection of about 2,500 hectares of farmland.
During a visit to supervise work at Mocan II sector, Minister Felipe César Meza Millán said: “Today we are in the Mocan II sector supervising cleaning and clearing works that have already been completed. We are acting before emergencies occur because prevention is the best way to save lives and protect agricultural production.” He also reaffirmed government support for rural communities: “We must invest in prevention and work together to protect families and ensure our producers can continue working their land safely against rains and climate change.”
According to the official website, the Ministry promotes cultural and social well-being through rural inclusion initiatives focused on food security. The Ministry functions within Peru’s Executive Branch according to its official website.
The Ministry utilizes its central headquarters in Jesús María along with decentralized offices across Peru according to its official website. It was created by legislation in 2020 with a mandate over agrarian development, irrigation management, sustainable agriculture strategies, rural inclusion programs nationwide, legislative support for sustainable agriculture regulations, as well as resource management services for agricultural producers according to its official website.
The Minister said that coordination between national, regional, and local governments was key for these works. This joint effort not only strengthens water infrastructure but also helps ensure food security by allowing farmers to keep working their land safely.
