The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism announced on March 14 the launch of a public tender to restore and enhance the historic La Ermita church in Barranco. The project, valued at more than S/ 10 million, is part of an investment initiative aimed at improving public tourism services along the “Discovering Barranco” tourist route.
The restoration is intended to strengthen the cultural heritage of Barranco and improve the experience for over 332,000 domestic and international tourists who visit each year. The ministry said that this intervention is one of several strategies designed to boost tourism in Lima and diversify its offerings by upgrading public infrastructure related to tourism activities.
Interested consortia can submit their proposals through the State Electronic Procurement System portal until April 5. The contract award is scheduled for April 8, with construction expected to take approximately 480 calendar days.
La Ermita de Barranco is located near the well-known Puente de los Suspiros and access to Bajada de Baños. It holds significance as a cultural, historical, and religious site in the district, serving as a place of veneration for the Santísima Cruz. Originally built as a chapel in the second half of the eighteenth century by Panadero Caicedo, it has undergone several renovations up until 1960. In 1955, Law No. 12389 declared it a historic monument.
The ministry also noted that job creation during construction and increased economic activity are expected outcomes from this project.
