José Fernando Reyes Llanos, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, participated on March 16 in the ceremony marking the start of the 2026 school year at Luis Alberto Sánchez School in Occollo, Vinchos district, Ayacucho region. The event was attended by regional governor Wilfredo Oscorima, local authorities, and the school’s director.
The opening of the academic year is part of government efforts to ensure a successful start for students across Peru. Reyes said that education is a national priority under President José María Balcázar’s administration and highlighted measures taken to provide suitable conditions for students returning to classrooms throughout the country.
During his speech, Reyes emphasized the role of education in national development. “We know that education is the most powerful tool to transform lives and create opportunities. That is why, from the Executive Branch, we have the responsibility to continue working so that every girl, boy and young person in the country has access to quality education,” he said.
Reyes also spoke about Ayacucho’s productive and cultural potential. “Ayacucho is a region with great potential, with producers, entrepreneurs and artisans whose talent is recognized inside and outside the country. Products such as coffee, cocoa, quinoa and Huamanga stone crafts represent the effort and identity of its people,” he said. He added that his ministry supports actions so regional products can reach new markets and generate more opportunities for families.
Addressing students directly, Reyes encouraged them to make use of educational opportunities: “Believe in your abilities. Take advantage of every class, every book and every new knowledge. The future of Peru is being built here in Ayacucho and in these classrooms.”
The event included the inauguration of Luis Alberto Sánchez School’s new facilities for preschool through secondary levels. The infrastructure features innovation labs, workshops, modern furniture and equipment.
More than six million public school students returned to classes nationwide on this day across 53,631 schools offering Basic Regular Education. To prepare these schools for reopening after recent natural events affecting some areas, S/295 million was allocated by the Ministry of Education for preventive maintenance. Additionally, all educational materials—over 13 million units covering 431 titles—were distributed free to public school students with an investment of S/42.9 million.
