The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on May 5 that the Terminal Portuario de Paita has reached a historic milestone by moving more than 3.4 million tons of cargo in 2025. Minister of Transport and Communications Aldo Martín Prieto Barrera visited the terminal to oversee its development, which includes an investment plan totaling USD 311 million.
This achievement is significant as it reinforces the port’s strategic role in northern Peru and its contribution to agricultural and hydrobilogical exports. The terminal registered advancements in infrastructure, efficiency, and technology during inspections of key areas such as container zones, scanners, multipurpose docks, control centers, and other facilities.
“The Terminal Portuario de Paita se posiciona en el primer lugar a nivel nacional en contenedores refrigerados y se consolida como el principal hub logístico del norte del Perú, impulsando las exportaciones agrícolas e hidrobiológicas,” said Prieto. He added that the port’s location connects Peruvian production with international markets for high-demand products like grapes, blueberries, avocados, mangoes, and coffee.
Modernization projects include improvements to access roads and parking for cargo vehicles as well as new information systems and control gates designed to ease traffic congestion around the port area. Other initiatives involve expanding reefer racks for refrigerated containers, acquiring mobile cranes, dredging maneuvering zones and docking areas, plus implementing rockfall containment systems.
Social projects have also benefited over 20 thousand citizens through investments in education, health care, and sports infrastructure funded by S/68.5 million transferred from three percent of the terminal’s income to the Fondo Social de Paita.
The Ministry operates under its minister’s guidance as part of Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport and communications policy according to the official website. The ministry says it supports national connectivity through enhanced infrastructure while serving communities throughout Peru.
