The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) announced on May 16 that it held the 40th edition of the “Workshop on Mining Integration and Sustainable Development” for more than 100 students and graduates from various technical and university programs in the Ancash region. The event aimed to involve young people in promoting modern, responsible, and sustainable mining practices.

This workshop was organized by the General Directorate of Mining Promotion and Sustainability (DGPSM) at the auditorium of Agricultural Sciences at Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo National University (UNASAM) in Huaraz. Esperanza Molla, head of the Directorate of Sustainability and Mining Articulation (DSAM), said, “The students were trained not only to learn more about national mining activity and close information gaps but also to get involved from their education stage so they can become allies for ensuring that the State, companies, and communities have an objective view regarding mining, environmental management, and social development.”

Molla added that participants included students from engineering, social sciences, law, sociology, anthropology, social work, administration, economics, accounting, communications science and marketing from both public universities such as UNASAM as well as private institutions like César Vallejo University. She said: “For us it is very important to provide objective information about how mining is being developed both regionally and nationally—covering technical aspects as well as legal and economic issues—so we have professionals capable of meeting future mining needs.”

Specialists from MINEM along with Ingemmet and AMSAC led instruction sessions focused on mining’s role in Peru’s economy through value generation for GDP growth as well as addressing environmental liabilities. Authorities such as Pedro Colia Cerna (dean of Agricultural Sciences at UNASAM) and Ricardo Castillejo Melgarejo (director of DREM Ancash) praised MINEM’s efforts for contributing to economic development benefiting all Peruvians.

According to the official website, MINEM contributes to social well-being by encouraging harmonious relations among sector participants while supporting operations through its central headquarters in San Borja alongside regional directorates across Peru. The ministry promotes sustainable energy development by issuing regulations guiding best practices across communities nationwide under ministerial leadership.
