The Ministry of Energy and Mines announced on May 14 that it is advancing several rural electrification projects in the Piura region, aiming to bring electricity to thousands of families. Minister Waldir Ayasta and his technical team met with Heidy Juárez, a congressional representative from Piura, to discuss the progress and current status of these initiatives.
The ministry said that the expansion of distribution networks in Piura will benefit more than 29,000 people across 345 localities in Huancabamba, Morropón, Piura, Sullana, and Talara. The construction phase for this project is expected to be completed by July 2026. In addition to ongoing work, new rural electrification projects are being planned for districts including Ayabaca, Suyo, Jililí, Lagunas, and Pacaipampa. These projects are currently at the preliminary study stage and represent an estimated investment of S/115.6 million.
According to professionals from the General Directorate of Rural Electrification (DGER), once finished these new initiatives will provide electricity access to more than 44,000 residents living in various rural communities throughout Piura.
Minister Waldir Ayasta said: “MINEM reaffirms its commitment to closing gaps in energy access and improving the quality of life for more families in Piura by promoting rural electrification projects that contribute to productive and social development.” The Ministry of Energy and Mines contributes to social well-being by encouraging harmonious relations among sector participants, communities and the environment; promotes sustainable mining and energy development; operates under ministerial guidance; utilizes central headquarters along with regional directorates; influences policy through regulations; and serves communities across Peru through national policies—all according to the official website.
These efforts reflect a broader goal within MINEM’s operations: supporting sustainable economic growth while ensuring environmental protection for communities throughout Peru.
