The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) and Women in Mining (WIM) Peru signed an Institutional Cooperation Framework Agreement on March 31 to exchange knowledge related to mining, environmental, economic, and social matters. The agreement also aims to support gender-focused awareness programs and capacity-building initiatives that contribute to sustainable mining.

This collaboration is intended to enhance research and leadership with the goal of increasing the presence of women in the mining industry over the coming years. The Vice Minister of Mines at MINEM, Juan Samanez, signed the document alongside Nahil Hirsh, president of WIM Peru. Samanez said these alliances are designed to strengthen female participation and professional development within national mining activities.

Hirsh said that Women in Mining has a presence across 15 regions in Peru with around 4,000 members. She added that these members support the work of MINEM’s Directorate for Sustainability and Mining Articulation by training thousands of female leaders throughout the country through the Mining Articulation Program.

The agreement includes commitments such as technical assistance for joint training sessions, creation of informational materials, research or publications on topics related to mining, as well as sharing information about best practices within the sector. Both organizations have previously worked together on coordination spaces and training activities linked to mining; this formal agreement seeks to further solidify their cooperation.

Within MINEM, implementation will be led by the Vice Ministry of Mines through its General Directorate for Promotion and Sustainability in Mining as institutional coordinator. The Directorate for Sustainability and Mining Articulation will organize informative sessions aimed at fostering good relationships among stakeholders including government bodies, communities, and companies involved in mining.

WIM Peru will promote women’s participation by encouraging leadership development, continuous education opportunities, employability efforts, inclusion best practices, and decentralizing actions nationwide.
