The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) announced on March 15 that it will organize three craft fairs in the districts of Magdalena del Mar (Lima), Huamanga (Ayacucho), and Kimbiri in Cusco’s Vraem region to commemorate Peruvian Artisan Day.
These fairs, scheduled from March 19 to 29 under the brand “Artesanías del Perú,” will bring together around 100 businesses, organizations, and individuals involved in the artisan sector. The initiative aims to support the recovery of this productive activity, promote national identity, and connect artisans’ products with more Peruvians and foreigners. “With the development of the ‘Artesanías del Perú’ fairs we stimulate the recovery of this productive activity, promote national identity and bring artisans’ products closer to more Peruvians and foreigners,” said Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism José Reyes.
As part of activities for Artisan Month, Mincetur is also participating in organizing a central mass for Peruvian Artisan Day on March 15 at Lima Cathedral. On March 20, there will be a ceremony for awarding the National Prize “Joaquín López Antay Medal” in conjunction with Congress, as well as presenting the “National Award for Women Artisans.” All these events are part of Mincetur’s campaign “March, Month of the Artisan.”
The first fair in Magdalena del Mar will take place from March 19 to 22 at Plaza Túpac Amaru with about 30 artisans. In Ayacucho, from March 20 to 27 at Huamanga’s Plaza de Armas, nearly 40 regional artisans—including beneficiaries from CITE Artesanía y Turismo Ayacucho—will participate. The third fair runs from March 20 to 29 at Kimbiri’s main square in Cusco, featuring associations and artisans from several local communities. This event is also intended to help reactivate Kimbiri’s economy after recent climate-related disruptions.
Additionally, five new Councils for Artisan Promotion are being established during Artisan Month: local councils in Frías (March 4), Magdalena and Catacaos (March 19), a regional council in Áncash (March 23), and a national council on March 27. There are now a total of twenty-seven such councils nationwide.
Peruvian Artisan Day is celebrated every March 19 to recognize the importance of crafts across the country as established by Article 27 of the Law on Artisanship and Development of Craft Activity.
