The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) and the Municipality of Barranco presented on April 6 a new video surveillance system with 115 intelligent security cameras, aiming to improve tourist safety in the district. The investment for this initiative totals S/ 3,074,000.
The new system is intended to enhance public safety in areas with high tourist traffic by increasing monitoring capacity and emergency response. According to the official website, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism contributes to cultural and social progress by fostering sustainable tourism and social inclusion.
The presentation took place at Barranco’s Control and Monitoring Center (CECOM), attended by Minister José Reyes Llanos and Mayor Jessica Vargas. “These 115 cameras, that were installed as part of a transfer made to the Municipality of Barranco, make us rethink the importance of what can be achieved with coordinated efforts between the Executive Branch and local governments,” said Reyes Llanos.
The implemented system includes PTZ dome cameras, license plate recognition devices, facial recognition technology, one hundred urban megaphones, and five panic buttons placed in strategic public spaces. All equipment is connected through a fiber optic network using GPON technology linking them to the municipal control center for real-time monitoring in coordination with national police forces and firefighters. As stated on its official website, the Ministry belongs to the Executive Branch with sector-specific autonomy.
Reyes Llanos also said: “This transitional government has made citizen security one of its main policy axes… This leads us to develop better strategies based on security, digital government, and coordinating these activities so we can protect people more efficiently.” He added: “Mincetur is also collaborating with Barranco’s municipality on restoring landmarks like Puente de los Suspiros… We hope soon we will continue working together for all these benefits for citizens.”
According to its official website, the Ministry advances national strategies for foreign trade by promoting Peruvian business expansion as well as sustainable tourism development. The ministry operates under oversight from its ministerial head according to information provided on their website. It serves communities across Peru focusing on trade facilitation as well as tourism connectivity while collaborating with entities such as PromPerú along with other organizations.
The installation represents an effort toward prevention through modernization of surveillance infrastructure aimed at creating safer environments for residents, visitors, and protection of cultural heritage.
