The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) announced on March 26 that it has made significant progress in implementing the National Strategy for the European Union Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR). The ministry reported surpassing its national target for geolocating agricultural plots, a key step in improving traceability within Peru’s agricultural supply chains.
This development is important as it supports Peru’s efforts to meet new European Union requirements for deforestation-free products. Ensuring robust traceability helps maintain access to international markets, particularly for exports such as coffee, cocoa, and palm oil.
According to MIDAGRI, joint actions with organizations including DEVIDA, IICA, Helvetas Peru, the AL-Invest Verde Program of the European Union, and producer organizations enabled the geolocation of 181,731 agricultural plots nationwide. This achievement exceeded initial targets through improvements to the Agro Digital mobile application and collaboration with both national and international entities. Technical support was provided directly to producers in the field while integrating geo-referenced data. Additionally, 69 memorandums of understanding were signed to further consolidate advances in traceability.
The ministry also established partnerships with the World Resources Institute (WRI) for use of its Global Forest Watch platform. Cooperation continues with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on using WHISP (World-wide Harmonized Information on Surface Parameters), providing tools that help assess compliance with EUDR deforestation-free standards.
A national web platform has been launched by MIDAGRI to centralize official information, technical tools, and outreach materials related to regulation implementation. These measures aim to reinforce product chain traceability while supporting sustainable production practices and ensuring continued access for Peruvian agrarian exports into European markets.
