The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) announced on March 26 that pet owners planning to travel with dogs or cats, either abroad or into Peru, during the upcoming Holy Week should be aware of specific health requirements. The agency urged travelers to complete all necessary procedures in advance due to an expected increase in travel during this period.
These guidelines are important for ensuring both animal health and compliance with national and international regulations. MIDAGRI said that a Certificate of Exportation Health (CSE) is required for international travel with pets, and its issuance depends on the destination country’s requirements. To obtain this certificate, travelers must present a health certificate, up-to-date vaccination records, meet any additional conditions set by the destination country, and pay the corresponding processing fee at least 72 hours before departure.
For those entering Peru with pets, MIDAGRI stated that travelers need an international sanitary certificate issued by the relevant authority from their country of origin as well as payment for the required sanitary inspection. The ministry also highlighted recent improvements in its services: “As part of service modernization efforts, SENASA launched the digital platform ‘Viaja con tu mascota’ in October 2025,” which allows users to register their pets online, upload documents and proof of payment, and schedule virtual inspections. Since its launch, 2,643 pets have traveled to 65 countries using this system.
In Lima, SENASA provides round-the-clock service at its Lima Hub location in Callao throughout holidays. Additional offices are available in Lima Este (Ate) and Lima Sur (Lurín). For domestic travel within Peru’s borders, MIDAGRI clarified that it is not necessary to obtain a movement certificate from SENASA; however, it recommends checking transport company policies beforehand and carrying valid vaccination records along with a veterinarian-issued health certificate confirming good animal health.
MIDAGRI reaffirmed its commitment “to continue strengthening and modernizing services aimed at citizens,” encouraging safe and responsible pet travel throughout Holy Week and beyond.
