The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) announced on March 26 that it is carrying out actions to clarify the regulatory framework and promote risk management in relation to Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, also known as the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
This initiative is part of a sectoral strategy aimed at meeting the requirements of the regulation and creating enabling conditions for coffee, cocoa, and oil palm producers. MIDAGRI has established a Multisectoral Working Group made up of 17 public sector entities, with participation from the private sector, trade associations, and civil society.
As a result of these efforts, an orientation document on applicable legislation for coffee and cocoa has been prepared. Its publication is scheduled for this year. This document aims to help operators and competent authorities in the European Union better understand Peru’s legal framework.
Additionally, decentralized workshops have been held in various regions across the country to share information about European regulations. These activities have benefited more than 1,400 stakeholders including representatives from organizations, cooperatives, associations, exporting companies, and public officials connected to agriculture. Pilot exports of coffee and cocoa to the European Union were also implemented as part of these efforts. These pilots helped identify key aspects needed for compliance with EUDR.
Looking ahead through 2026, MIDAGRI plans to continue outreach activities, training sessions, and technical tool development with support from German Development Cooperation implemented by GIZ. The goal is to promote sustainable agricultural production that is competitive and aligned with international standards.
