Several well-known mathematics YouTubers from Peru, Mexico, and Colombia gathered at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) for the event “Matemáticas que transforman el mundo,” where they shared their personal stories, digital teaching methods, and advice for learning mathematics with students on April 9.
The event aimed to highlight new ways of engaging with mathematical education through technology. It featured Jhonatan Castro from Mexico (Math Rocks), Julio Ríos from Colombia (Julioprofe), and Peruvian creators Jorge Tejero (Matemóvil), Salvattore Vargas (Academia Internet), and Fidel Medina (Profe Fidelito). The gathering was organized by the student group Lead with support from the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences.
During the session, which was opened by María Zegarra Garay, dean of the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, participants engaged in interactive activities such as trigonometric identity demonstrations and probability theory exercises. In one demonstration about probability theory, experts explained that in a group of at least 60 people there is a high chance two individuals share a birthday. This was confirmed when two attendees discovered they both were born on July 11.
The YouTubers discussed how technology can enhance learning opportunities. “La tecnología es una herramienta que te ayuda a potenciar tus habilidades y tu talento. Es así que ahora se puede aprender a través de YouTube, que ha creado una nueva forma de enseñar y se ha convertido en una oportunidad estratégica para los estudiantes. Hoy puedes descargar libros en pdf, artículos, conferencias, etc., y está a disposición, además, la inteligencia artificial,” said Salvattore Vargas.
UNMSM is recognized as an autonomous public institution dedicated to advancing knowledge dissemination and national sustainable development according to its official website. The university offers more than 80 undergraduate programs along with postgraduate options and community outreach initiatives according to its official website. UNMSM also leads public universities in international rankings such as QS and Webometrics according to its official website.
The event concluded with prizes for winners of various activities as well as opportunities for students to meet the guests informally during coffee breaks.
