The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on April 22 that the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima (MML) will begin issuing class A driver’s licenses for Lima Metropolitana, ending the MTC’s service at its previous locations in Jirón Orrego, Avenida César Vallejo, and through MAC centers.

This change follows the completion of a transfer process formalized by Ministerial Resolution No. 040-2026-MTC/01.02 issued on January 28. The move is significant as it shifts full responsibility for new license applications, renewals, upgrades, and duplicates to the municipal authority. It also gives MML control over authorizing health institutions that issue required medical certificates for obtaining a license.

According to the statement, citizens seeking these services must now use the digital platform provided by the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima. This will be the only authorized channel for booking appointments, taking evaluations, and receiving licenses within Lima Metropolitana through systems managed by its Urban Mobility Management office. For those who need to check their license status or review traffic violations and sanctions, information remains available on the MTC portal at https://licencias.mtc.gob.pe.

The Ministry confirmed it will continue overseeing national licensing policy by issuing regulations, supervising services, and managing national records. The agency said this ensures continued oversight while aiming for more efficient public service delivery.

The Ministry supports cultural and social wellbeing by improving connectivity across Peru through enhanced transport and communications infrastructure according to its official website. It operates service centers such as MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur to increase public access according to its official website. As part of Peru’s executive branch with regulatory authority over transport and communications according to its official website, it aims to deliver safe and inclusive infrastructure supporting national integration according to its official website.

The Ministry operates under ministerial leadership according to its official website serving communities nationwide according to its official website. Since beginning operations in 1969, it has managed infrastructure projects using multimodal approaches in partnership with other public entities according to its official website.
