The Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitación “Dra. Adriana Rebaza Flores” Amistad Perú-Japón, part of the Ministry of Health, announced on Apr. 28 a new educational program aimed at supporting caregivers of rehabilitation patients.
The initiative seeks to address the challenges faced by those who care for others, often family members or close supporters, whose own health and emotional well-being can be affected by their responsibilities.
The Cuidando al Cuidador program offers free theoretical and practical workshops for caregivers of patients registered with the INR and covered by SIS. The goal is to help participants recognize their limits, identify early signs of burnout, and strengthen their ability to build support networks. According to the institute, activities will run from April through November this year under the guidance of specialists in psychology and social work from the Department of Research, Teaching and Comprehensive Rehabilitation in Central Injuries.
More than 300 caregivers are expected to benefit from a series of four sessions designed for meaningful progress and personalized follow-up. The first session focuses on self-recognition and assessment; the second addresses self-care strategies including practical tools for maintaining well-being, setting healthy boundaries, identifying warning signs, and understanding caregiver rights. The final two sessions aim at emotional strengthening with skills such as assertive communication, developing emotional intelligence, avoiding overprotection tendencies, fostering independence in those they care for while maintaining mutual balance.
The institute said this effort reinforces its comprehensive approach to rehabilitation that extends beyond medical offices or therapy rooms into daily life. “Because in order to provide effective care and support it is essential to be well oneself. Taking care is always the first step towards better caring for others,” said representatives from INR.
