The Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitación “Dra. Adriana Rebaza Flores” Amistad Perú-Japón, part of the Ministry of Health, announced on May 5 that it has begun a series of strategic meetings with regional health directorates and management offices to strengthen telesalud (telehealth) services across the country.
These efforts aim to ensure timely and specialized care at the national level by expanding access to physical medicine and rehabilitation through technology. The first working session was organized by the Functional Unit of Telesalud at the institute and involved teams from Piura’s regional health directorate as well as hospitals Santa Rosa, Las Mercedes de Paita, Chulucanas, and Sullana.
During the session, Erika Giraldo Vizcarra, general director of the institute, said: “It is important to enhance the use of technology to expand coverage in physical medicine and rehabilitation, bringing specialized services closer to people through teleconsultations and promoting coordinated clinical management between our specialists and doctors throughout the country.”
According to officials present at the meeting—including representatives from both the Functional Unit of Telesalud at INR and from Minsa’s General Directorate for Telesalud—telemedicine represents a significant change for users because it eliminates travel costs for patients and caregivers. It also reduces physical exhaustion associated with long trips for those with severe disabilities while facilitating detection of complex cases requiring custom devices or assistive technologies.
The institute plans further coordination meetings with Amazonas and Áncash regions later in May. Officials say these actions are part of ongoing efforts by Minsa to bring specialized healthcare services closer to all departments in Peru.
