The Hospital Nacional Hipólito Unanue of the Ministry of Health organized a voluntary blood donation campaign at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, La Molina campus, according to an April 15 announcement.
The event aimed to increase the supply of blood units needed for immediate care of patients in critical situations, including pregnant women, children, and those requiring emergency surgeries.
Eduardo Cornejo, a physician from the hospital’s Blood Bank, said that every volunteer underwent a thorough evaluation. This included hemoglobin tests and medical interviews to ensure safety throughout the process. Once cleared as suitable donors, participants completed the extraction procedure in about seven to nine minutes and then rested briefly afterward for their well-being.
Cornejo said that one unit of donated blood can save up to three lives because it is divided based on each patient’s needs. He also highlighted strong participation from university students—especially those studying health sciences—who showed significant commitment to this cause.
Cornejo called on more people to join future campaigns. He reminded men they can donate every three months and women every four months. He also noted that donating blood benefits donors themselves by promoting renewal of blood cells and offering basic health checks.
The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to promoting voluntary blood donation as both a life-saving measure and a way to encourage healthy habits among the population.
