The Hospital Carlos Lanfranco La Hoz of the Ministry of Health provided immediate care to a premature newborn weighing 690 grams and measuring 31.5 centimeters, following an emergency cesarean section on Feb. 15.
The case involved a 19-year-old mother who had only one prenatal checkup and gave birth at high risk, which triggered the hospital’s neonatology protocols. This situation highlights the challenges faced by healthcare providers in responding quickly to critical cases involving extremely premature infants.
After stabilization in the neonatal unit for 38 days, medical staff monitored the infant with echocardiograms and other imaging tests to ensure vital organ function. The baby received fortified nutrition and oral supplements during her stay at the hospital.
Over this period, her weight increased from 690 grams to just over one kilogram. Due to her need for complex multidisciplinary care for long-term development prospects, she was transferred to Hospital Dos de Mayo where further specialized treatment will continue.
The Ministry of Health reaffirmed its commitment to early-life health care and emphasized the importance of timely prenatal controls for pregnant women as well as ongoing preparation among specialists to handle complex medical challenges.
