The Ministry of Health announced on March 17 that Hospital Carlos Alcántara Butterfield, part of the Social Health Insurance (EsSalud), has been recategorized to level II-2. This change strengthens the hospital’s ability to provide specialized and timely care for residents in Lima Este.
The new status was granted through Directoral Resolution No. 041-2026-DHGS-DIRIS-LE/MINSA, recognizing the facility as a General Care Hospital for three years after it met technical standards required in the categorization process.
With this level, the hospital can now offer outpatient services, 24-hour emergency care, hospitalization, external consultations in various specialties, surgical center operations, delivery room services, intensive care units, diagnostic imaging, and specialized procedures. These expanded capabilities are expected to increase problem-solving capacity and reduce the need for patient referrals.
The evaluation was conducted by the Technical Categorization Committee of IPRESS from the Integrated Health Networks Directorate (DIRIS) Lima Este. The committee verified compliance with criteria related to infrastructure, equipment, health service production units (UPSS), and availability of qualified personnel.
During the announcement event, Dr. Luis Napoleón Quiroz Avilés, Minister of Health, said that this recategorization is part of government policy aimed at ensuring accessible and quality health services. He also said that working groups are being promoted to evaluate and support other health facilities in Lima during their categorization processes.
“The granting of category II-2 is not just an administrative recognition but a step that directly impacts patient care. Behind this decision are health professionals, technical teams, and a commitment to continue improving services,” he said.
Quiroz Avilés also said that this new category brings greater responsibilities regarding quality and timeliness of care and highlighted the sustained efforts made by the hospital over the years.
He further reported that insulin supply nationwide has been regularized to ensure continuity of treatment for patients who need it.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the health service network and ensuring timely access to medicines for all citizens.
