The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation announced on Apr. 27 the launch of the 2026 campaign for the Sustainable Productive Forests Program, aiming to plant ten million trees by 2028. The initiative will benefit one hundred productive organizations and promote ten thousand hectares of commercial plantations with a focus on sustainability.
The program, led by the National Forestry and Wildlife Service, has an investment of S/85 million to support forest plantations for commercial purposes and transform degraded lands into productive opportunities for rural families. The announcement was made in La Encañada district, Cajamarca, with Minister Felipe César Meza Millán attending alongside local authorities and community members.
“The MIDAGRI will install ten million trees for commercial purposes, reforesting ten thousand hectares with an investment of eighty-five million soles benefiting one hundred forestry organizations in seven regions,” said Meza Millán. “Let us continue joining efforts so that these plantations become productive and sustainable forests, generating economic opportunities for our rural families.” Erasmo Otárola, executive director of Serfor, said: “We are promoting commercial forest plantations as a key axis for economic development, climate action and job creation in the country.”
The intervention is taking place in Cajamarca, Áncash, Junín, Pasco, Huánuco, San Martín and Madre de Dios. Producers receive co-financing for business plans involving species such as pine, eucalyptus, cedar and bolaina. The state provides up to S/742,500 per project not only supporting plantation installation but also infrastructure improvements and fire prevention measures.
Cajamarca stands out as a leading region within this campaign; more than six hundred thousand trees have been planted there with over one thousand direct jobs created so far. By 2028 it aims to surpass three million trees planted through public-private partnerships recognized as good practices in public management.
During the event cheques were given to three producer organizations along with official plantation records marking progress toward formalizing the sector. The event concluded with a symbolic planting activity highlighting how this program can improve incomes and opportunities for rural families nationwide.
