The government announced on March 31 that it is increasing efforts to clean, desilt, and channel rivers and streams in response to heavy rainfall affecting various regions. These actions aim to protect families and reduce the risk of flooding.
The importance of these measures lies in preventing disasters, safeguarding lives, and ensuring safe conditions for communities facing emergencies caused by natural events such as El Niño.
As part of this initiative, the president of the Council of Ministers and the Minister of Housing conducted an aerial inspection over the Huabalito sector of the Chicama River in Ascope province. They supervised ongoing cleanup operations using heavy machinery provided by the “Nuestras Ciudades” program. The intervention will remove 15,925 cubic meters of accumulated material along a 0.3-kilometer stretch, directly benefiting about 350 people with equipment including a crawler tractor, front loader, and dump truck.
“We are visiting affected areas—cities hit hard by El Niño. We provide support through emergency housing rental bonuses, our machinery, and help from our soldiers to clean streets,” representatives from the Ministry of Housing said regarding these efforts across different regions.
Work in Huabalito is scheduled to continue until April 15 with a focus on protecting homes, crops, and access roads. Regionally this year in La Libertad alone—including Trujillo, Ascope, Chepén, Gran Chimú, and Santiago de Chuco—the Ministry has completed thirteen interventions benefiting around 8,500 residents by removing more than 74 thousand cubic meters of debris.
Nationally this year there have been 211 interventions carried out by the Ministry of Housing across Peru reaching nearly 371 thousand people. The government stated it will continue prevention work with new planned projects prioritizing high-risk areas while coordinating closely with local authorities for quick responses.
During his visit to Ascope province as part of these activities, the Minister symbolically delivered a property title to a resident—a result achieved through coordinated work with local municipalities that has led to over two hundred titles being granted this year. The minister also joined other officials at inaugurations for educational facilities and police laboratories intended to improve services for residents.
