The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) announced on March 20 that it has deployed machinery to carry out cleaning and desilting work at five additional critical points in Ayabaca, Piura region, following intense rainfall.

The National Water Authority (ANA), under MIDAGRI, is using its own equipment to focus efforts in the sectors of Sausal de Quiroz, Huachuma, Las Pircas, Sausal de la Frontera, Frejolito, and Remolinos. Two excavators and a front loader are operating in these areas to protect local farmers, crops, and hydraulic infrastructure.

According to the ministry’s plan, machinery has been mobilized since January with ongoing accelerated work along the Piura and Chira river basins as well as the San Francisco ravine. The intervention aims to cover 10.9 kilometers by September. For 2026, MIDAGRI has allocated funds to address seven vulnerable points across Sullana, Morropón, Ayabaca, and Sechura provinces.

In the Piura river basin at Chulucanas district (Filtraciones sector), 6,900 cubic meters of material have been removed. In Sechura district at Virrilá dike, 2,035 cubic meters have been extracted. In La Matanza district’s San Francisco ravine, passage was restored after removing over 41,700 cubic meters of earth and vegetation.

Work in the Chira river basin includes removing nearly 9,600 cubic meters of debris from Potreritos sector (Querecotillo district). At Limonal sector over 110,000 cubic meters are being processed while Jambur II bridge shows progress with more than 38,000 cubic meters cleared. Operations at Tamarindo point (Paita district) are currently suspended.

These interventions are expected to benefit about 17,700 residents by protecting approximately 3,500 homes and safeguarding nearly 4,935 hectares of farmland. ANA has carried out similar actions nationwide for over a year; in 2025 it addressed 124 critical points covering more than 132 kilometers and removed over five million cubic meters of material across regions including Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Áncash, Lima and Apurímac.
