The Ministry of Transport and Communications, together with the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Urban Transport Authority for Lima and Callao, held meetings on Mar. 31 with representatives from urban, cargo, and interprovincial passenger transport unions to assess the impact of rising fuel prices and discuss possible temporary targeted economic assistance.

This issue is significant as increased fuel costs can affect the operation of various segments within the transportation sector, potentially impacting service continuity for passengers and goods across regions.

According to the ministry, these meetings were organized in three separate groups: first with urban transport representatives, followed by cargo transport leaders, and finally those from interprovincial passenger services. This approach aimed to address each segment’s specific needs. During these technical sessions, participants worked on defining key elements of potential economic support measures such as scope, amount, beneficiaries, and other characteristics to ensure a feasible proposal that maintains uninterrupted service.

Sector representatives outlined their main concerns during the discussions. Meanwhile, government officials said they are considering several mechanisms to make financial assistance possible without causing market distortions. Alternatives under review include measures aimed at reducing fuel costs.

The ministry stated that technical work will continue along with efforts to secure necessary legal backing for any proposed assistance package. Dialogue between authorities and sector stakeholders is expected to remain ongoing as solutions are developed.
