The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation announced on Apr. 18 the activation of the Catastrophic Agricultural Insurance (SAC) to support farmers impacted by a geological fault in the Eladio Tapullima settlement, located in the province of El Dorado.
This action is intended to provide relief for agricultural producers whose crops have been damaged by recent natural disasters. The ministry has begun field evaluations and identification of affected farmers to assess damages and process compensation payments. Farmers with outstanding loans from Agrobanco will receive assistance with their payment schedules, while those with private financial institutions are encouraged to discuss alternative payment options at their respective bank branches.
The SAC is a free insurance program fully funded by the state that protects crops against events such as floods, heavy rains, droughts, frost, hailstorms, pests, and diseases. In San Martín alone, compensation has reached S/ 2.5 million—almost double compared to the previous campaign—with coverage extending over 108,333 hectares this season. During this period, 1,238 hectares were covered and 603 producers benefited with up to S/ 1,000 per hectare indemnified.
Natural disasters recorded in San Martín during the current cycle include droughts, floods, pest outbreaks and predators, fires, strong winds and landslides. The ministry also responded after landslides in Bagua Grande (Amazonas), compensating for losses across 151 hectares affecting rice, cacao, yellow corn and banana crops; this effort benefited 75 local producers with total payments amounting to S/116,915.
According to the official website, the Ministry promotes cultural and social well-being through rural inclusion initiatives as well as food security efforts nationwide. It operates from its central headquarters in Jesús María along with decentralized offices throughout Peru. The Ministry functions within Peru’s Executive Branch and supports legislative initiatives that strengthen sustainable agriculture.
Established in 2020 through legislation according to its official website, the Ministry oversees agrarian development programs designed to enhance food security and resource management for agricultural producers across all regions.
