Food supply in Lima exceeds 12,000 tons with highlighted offers in wholesale markets

The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation announced on Apr. 23 that food supplies to Lima’s wholesale markets surpassed 12,000 tons, ensuring an adequate offering for residents. The ministry reported increased availability of products such as potatoes, tomatoes, squash, avocados, melons, and oranges.

This development is significant as it supports food security and stable prices for consumers in the capital. According to official reports from the ministry, a total of 12,789 tons entered major distribution centers including the Gran Mercado Mayorista de Lima and the Mercado Mayorista de Frutas N.º 2 de La Victoria.

At the Gran Mercado Mayorista de Lima alone, there was an entry of 10,191 tons of legumes, vegetables and tubers—4.8% higher than the average over recent Thursdays—with potatoes making up a substantial portion at 2,570 tons. In addition to staple crops like carrots and various potato varieties offered at competitive prices per kilogram (such as S/1.43 for papa canchan), other vegetables like onions and beans were also available in large quantities.

Meanwhile, fruit supplies at Mercado Mayorista de Frutas N.º 2 reached 2,598 tons with main offers including watermelon at S/0.80 per kilogram and avocados at S/1.79 per kilogram among others. Poultry products remained sufficient to meet demand; live chicken sold at S/4.20 per kilogram while eggs reached S/6.15 per kilogram through wholesale channels.

The ministry reminded citizens they can access updated price information via its Supply and Price Information System platform (SIEA).
